The folk singer Woody Guthrie once described himself as a “little one-cylinder guitar picker.” I’m partial to the phrase because it sums up fairly well my work as a nurseryman propagating heirloom apple trees. I work also as a teacher and freelance writer; my articles have appeared in a variety of publications including Mother Earth News, Fine Gardening, Small Farmer’s Journal, Old Farmer’s Almanac, Homelife, Highlights for Children, and Smithsonian Magazine. I live with seven of ten children still at home in a folk Victorian on Cumberland Street in Bristol, Virginia. For more about what we are up to in the nursery, check out our blog at RoodRemarks.com. My first book, The Cultivation of Rachael Field, is soon to be released at LittleFoxPress.com.
